Carol (Victor/KK), First thing that came into my mind was that if maths was
necessary then a lot of academics and practioners would feel a bit out on a
limb (would they not?). I remember reading somewhere that mathematics was
the language of pattern and somewhere else the language of relations, hence
at the very least one should have a sound appreciation of the maths to
participate in the network of conversations about the pros and cons of
applying the principles of CS. However, that does not mean one cannot make a
meaningful contribution to its development without it, although that 'sound
appreciation'  would undoubtedly prove useful when model building (even if
it tells you that precise modelling and prediction is not possible).

One case in point is the contribution, much overlooked and underappreciated,
that the biologists Maturana and Varela have made to developing an
explanation of why living systems are complex.
